Why Meditation Enhances Your Strength Training
If you lift weights and exercise to take care of your body,
I invite you to meditate to take care of your mind.
Working out is an integral self care practice for myself. It keeps my body alive and inspired. Lifting weights practices resistance, resilience and commitment to the body. Plus, as I age, strength training supports aging like fine wine. ;)
However, I learned that if you never stop moving, never stop to rest, this act of self care and wellness can become a detriment.
We grow up in a world that promotes hustling. The concept of rest goes against the grain of “success”. And this aggressive, forceful attitude has leaked into the fitness space.
How many fitness/nutrition fads have come from a place of aggression, force or even punishment?
Intensity is great. When implemented properly, intensity can lead to dope results. But this hustle..this way of life, is extremely unbalanced.
It is time to change things. And have no fear..because this shift is totally doable and you can still be fit.
I am the living proof
you can drop the intense fitness hustle and still be fit.
you can heal from over-exertion and lose the inflammation.
you can flourish by working WITH your body, not against.
you can evolve.
You deserve to feel good in your body.
Meditation is Fitness for the Mind
When you meditate, you practice focusing your attention inward which induces a deep state of relaxation. Meditation reduces stress, improves well-being, and can ease depression. My meditation practice actually brought me closer to my body, expanded my spirituality and has done a heap of healing in regards to anxiety.
Meditation is a beautiful practice to the active individual. It gives you a chance to let go of stress and let the body heal. It's rejuvenating as it allows your mind to clear and put you in the moment.
The more developed you get with meditation/mindfulness, you can activate this sense while moving, but to access deep parasympathetic healing, resting the body is essential.
Cortisol is the stress hormone. When overproduced, it can lead to inflammation, chronic illness, weak immune system and lack of energy. In our current world, majority of standard human life keeps us in fight or flight. This survival mode is a powerhouse of creating stress, and cortisol with it. So if you are a highly active person, are working out most days of the week but not giving your body and mind a chance to relax & recharge...the essential healing might not be taking place.
When we receive the healing and recharging we need, this can lead to:
- better workouts- more energy- mental clarity- happier joints & muscles- balanced adrenal glands- balanced hormones
Cultivate strength with resistance training.
Restore by slowing down and tuning inward.
